Meet The Senior Crew
Homer
Homer is a 10-year-old Basset hound who was left for dead after suffering a gunshot wound to the head. Little did his shooter know, the gunshot did not end Homer's life. He walked around for days until he was picked up by shelter staff and rushed to the vet. We took in Homer the same afternoon. Not only is Homer suffering from head injuries, but he also has terminal thyroid cancer, a grade 4 heart murmur, tumors on his neck and back, and is emaciated.
Homer has recovered from the gunshot wound but still has some lingering issues as a result. He suffers from partial paralysis on the left side and his vision and hearing are impaired. Homer is thought to have at least 6 months left with us and we will care for him until his time comes.
Lola
Lola was surrendered to us a few years ago with another elderly dog. Both were 12-13 years old. Her owner who had rescued them both had health problems and had to move in with her granddaughter. Lola was very attached to her owner and went through several weeks of grief after she arrived. Luckily, Lola came to love and trust us and became part of the family. Although the other little dog that arrived with Lola found a home quickly, no one showed interest in our sweet Lola. She has no health issues and is still very active. Lola can be very vocal when she is upset or bothered by another rescue dog. She lets them know her boundaries right away! We absolutely adore this old girl!
Freddy
Freddy is a special guy who wandered into the yard of a person who knew very little about caring for dogs. The homeowner however could see that his situation was urgent and immediately tried to find a rescue to take him in. Freddy is deaf, and blind. His eyes were severly infected and matted shut. The right eye was sunken into his skull. This poor soul was emaciated and matted beyond words. We did not have much hope for Freddy and thought he would possibly have to be humanely euthanized because of his condition. Surprisingly, Although Freddy was in bad shape, he didn't have any physical problems except his eyes and being malnourished. He has made huge progress in his foster home and continues to thrive. His eyes were eventually removed due to recurring infections. That doesn't slow Freddy down one bit!
Oscar
Oscar is a sweet senior fella who lost his owner when he passed away. He and his doggie family were surrendered to a local shelter when the owner's family did not want to care for them. The four other dogs that were surrendered with Oscar all made their way to rescue but he was left behind because he has no eyes. At some point in Oscar's life, he was attacked by another dog and had to have both eyes removed as a result of the attack. Oscar is a wonderful little Shih Tzu who doesn't really know he doesn't have eyes. He functions like a normal dog and no one even knows if you don't tell them. He has a wonderful personality and is very loving. We believe he's getting looked over again because of having no eyes which is a shame. We are hoping that a potential adopter will see other great qualities in Oscar and give him the forever home he deserves.

Barkley
Barkley is a 10-year-old dog who was surrendered to a shelter. His owner whom Barkley had spent his entire life decided he didn't want him anymore. Unfortunately, Barkley tested positive for heartworms. Because of his age and being extremely overweight, we decided not to put the old guy through treatment. We opted for the "slow kill" method. Barkley absolutely loves to play fetch and will cuddle with anyone who will let him. He does like to strut his stuff to the newbies that come in occasionally, then a long nap follows! Barkley is never far from a ball and usually carries it with him. His ball is off-limits to everyone else!

Chica
Chica is approximately 13-14 years old. When her owner passed away, some family members took Chica in. Although they loved her very much, the large resident dogs were just too much for this old girl. Chica needed a safe place to spend the rest of her days. We were happy to let that place be with us!
Even though she's a senior, Chica still is very feisty. If she doesn't want to do something, she hisses like a cat to let you know. She also has a very particular spot on the living room floor where she likes to go potty and will try to go there DAILY! This old gal is independent, demanding at meal times, and does not like her sleep to be disturbed!
